Alot of people dont know this but, In the early 1990's Edwin Birdsong served as one of my first mentors in the studio. Although the time i spent with him was brief, I was able to soak up alot of knowledge from this man in the art of music production and song composition. It's funny cause at the time Edwin's star had long since faded in the industry and I really didn't fully appreciate the jewels bieng dropped on me until i got much older. I knew he had collaborated wth Roy Ayers and was a bit awe struck at the time especially finding out he wrote and co-produced the classic Roy Ayers Disco era hit "Runing Away" sampled by Tribe Called quest on "Peoples Instictive Travels and the paths of rhythm" but bieng young and bullheaded we soon parted ways and i have not seen him in person since. Edwin Birdsong never achieved chart success, but developed a strong fan base, and has also been sampled by other artists many times, including Daft Punk who sampled "Cola Bottle Baby" in "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", De La Soul and Gang Starr who sampled his single "Rapper Dapper Snapper" for their songs "Me, Myself and I and "Skillz". FUNKGHOST: Using Influences From The Past To Create Music For The Future by Cyrus Webb

The man called the “Morris Day of Hip Hop” is relishing in the acclaim his single “The Way I Rock My Clothes” is getting, but remains focused on the goal of just giving the world good music. Known in the business as Funkghost, the Tampa, FL native has always been around beats. His father was a part-time dj, and Funkghost was a fan of the 8 tracks around him and was drawn to music made by artists like Run DMC.

Throughout the years he has always tried to show his support for any creative endeavor, looking for ways to build on his personal brand. As he began to build his reputation, Funkghost knew it was just as important to sell who you are as a person as it is to get your music out to the masses.

Over the years he has been asked for his advice by new artists who are trying to break into the business or that are looking for staying power. What does he tell them? “Don’t sign anything with anyone until you have your paperwork and yourself together legally. You have to protect your name and your image at the same time.”

Funkghost also draws on his own means of staying grounded for the next tip. “Surround yourself with successful people. Relationships are key. Make sure you are in a position where you are keeping all options and doors open.”

Looking back over his career in the entertainment business, Funkghost sees himself as a more seasoned artist and definitely more confident in who he is and what he represents. Above anything, he believes in being true to himself.

When asked how he defines success, Funkghost says it is getting new people to know who he is and to hear his music. Because of this, he is always taking advantage of new and innovative ways of connecting with people such as the social networking sites. He sees them as an invaluable way of reaching new heights as he continues forward into the New Year.

Now you might know him for another reason entirely: The former Soundcheck Artist of the Day just made the Deal Divas' list of the 10 Best Dressed People in Tampa Bay. No surprise, given the man's penchant for fine threads, as outlined in his video for The Way I Rock My Clothes.

Funkghost calls his style "dirty but sophisticated."

“You might wear a button-up shirt with a corduroy blazer and some distressed jeans with a fresh Gucci belt and some Supra sneakers," he told Deal Diva Nicole Hutcheson.

JET Interview–August 16, 1979 Michael Jackson: Nearly 21 but has no marriage plans, dates but not steady, fears love-sick fans, talks about racism and develops own lifestyle.

Michael Joseph (Smiley) Jackson, the angelic-voiced lead singer of the world famous vocal quintet of Jackson brothers, is a handsome young man whose onstage magnetism and magic are exceeded only by his offstage majesty and meek heartedness.

Born the fifth of six talented sons of Joseph and Katherine Jackson in Gary, Ind., nearly 21 years ago (Aug. 29, 195 , he is a Virgo, whose trait is unselfishness, and is moved by magnetic forces which draw so many admirers into his life that love is his for the taking. And his love-struck fans often do strange things to show their affection for him.

When one beautiful Black teenager recently boarded a packed plane and spotted him seated with his brothers, she stared in disbelief, began breathing heavily and became so excited that she started wetting in her panties and froze in her tracks as urine trickled down her legs.

At the arrival gate where girls had gathered to meet the Jacksons, a blonde teenager squeezed through the crushing crowd, slipped past security guards, pulled Michael toward her and tried to make him kiss her.

Returning recently from a world tour celebrating their 10th anniversary in show business, Michael, the only Jackson son who has reached the age of consent and is still unmarried, waded through a room full of mail, sorting out those proposing marriage. Bashful Michael answered them the same: “Thank you for the beautiful letter. It’s very nice. And we will always love you. Love, Michael Jackson and the Jacksons.”

Mild-mannered Micahel makes it clear that he gets no satisfaction writing the same letter to all of those female fans who want him for a husband. But he responds in brief dignity because he actually fears love-sick fans.

Sitting in the living room of his family’s home located on a parcel of land in Encino, Calif., purchased form the sprawling estate of the late lady-killer actor Clark Gable of Gone With The Wind fame, the young and eligible bachelor talked about marriage, dating and a wide range of topics which deeply concern him.

“I don’t like to break hearts,” he said solemnly and shyly, shifting his 5-foot, 9 ½ -inch body in a sofa chair. “I don’t really know these people and, gosh, it’s a weird thing.” He continued:

“That, I think, is the weird part about show business. You portray an image. And those people are into you so long, buying your records. You’re all over their walls. They wake up seeing you. They wake up thinking about you. You’re totally on their mind. And when they meet you in person, they feel they have been knowing you for a long time. But I don’t know them. You see, that’s the painful part of show business—the breaking of the hearts. Do you know what that does to them? God, some of them go to the point of committing suicide because they get real serious. That’s what I don’t know how to handle.”

For the young female bubblegum crowd whose voices are now turning from no to yes, he is especially fearful. About them he says, “You have to be careful because sometimes love can reverse on you. They feel they can’t get you and they’ll go to the point of plotting and planning terrible things on you or do terrible things to hurt you. That’s why it’s important to be nice, but sincerely nice.”

He recalled the nasty rumor that surfaced last year, falsely claiming that he had undergone a sex change. The rumor is not dead yet and he said his encounter with a love-crazed blonde at the aforementioned airport helps to revive it. “This beautiful girl with blonde hair was trying her hardest to pull me into her to kiss her,” Michael remembers. “She said, ‘You’re so sexy, kiss me.’ When I showed no kind of interest in her, she said, ‘What’s wrong, you fag?’ and walked off.”

He laments that he still has to tell people: “There’s a reason why I was created male. I’m not a girl. And what kills me the most and makes me want to break down in tears is when little kids, seven and eight, come to me asking me that. I say, no, and please tell all your other little friends it’s not true.”

What disturbs Michael more than the rumor is the kind of mail he receives from some of the bubble gum set. “You wouldn’t believe the mail I get. I mean some of it gets real vulgar,” he revealed. To him, such mail is as shocking as seeing a priest at a movie house watching The Devil And Mrs. Jones or Deep Throat. “Some of the mail gets real funky, not polite at all,” he says. “They tell you the stuff they want to do to you and everything, and how they’re going to do it. I just read and go, ‘Oh my God, these girls.’ There’s not much charm in girls anymore, like the guy used to always pick up the phone and call the girl. She would never call the guy. She would sit there all day until the phone would ring for her. But now the girls bother you to death….You see girls today 11 years old with bags and lipstick and eyeliner and lashes as well. They feel they’re women and they’re not.”

Don’t get the impression that the soft-spoken singer is a saint or square. Looking like the cliché description—tall, dark, and handsome—Michael is very much aware that he can now do at age 20 what he used to sing about when he was 10. One well-known witness is Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal, teenaged daughter of actor Ryan O’Neal.

A reporter for Modern People two years ago quoted Miss O’Neal as once saying she couldn’t wait to have her first affair. If she followed up the widely publicized comment with action involving manly Michael, he is not the kind to kiss and tell. He declined to discuss intimate details of dating Tatum, but was anxious to set the record straight about their romance. First, he readily admits the parallels in their lives: Both have protective parents. Tatum is a daddy’s girl and Michael is a mama’s boy. Both are attractive and wealthy. She rides in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce and millionaire Michael drives his own Rolls. Both are very shy. Michael is one of the brightest stars of the future and Tatum is, too.

“I want all those people who read JET to just know that we’re mainly good friends,” Michael assured. Admitting that there have been criticisms about their relations, Michael mused: “People take it to crazy means and crazy extents and I just tell them we’re really, really, really good friends. That’s all I say. They say, ‘Well how good friends are you? Is there any romance going on?’ I say, yes sometimes but not all the time.”

Although dating is part of his lifestyle, he is more interested in developing a new lifestyle around his family’s home which is now undergoing extensive renovations. Emphasizing that he is not ready to move out on his own like his four married brothers (Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon), Michael explains:

“I’ve always wanted to do this for my mother. She loves homes and everything and I do things by feeling and force. I don’t feel that it’s time for me to move away yet. There are so many things I want to do just staying here.

“If I move out now, I would die of loneliness. Most people who move out go to discos every night. They party every night. They invite friends over and I don’t do any of those things. I would really die of loneliness.”

Michael’s renovation plans will include the addiction of a tennis court, a remodeled swimming pool, a gym room, a movie room, a rehearsal studio and a library.

Living at home with his mother, Katherine, father Joseph, brother Randy, and sisters, Janet and LaToya, the young entertainer explores his many talents and grapples with social and religious concerns.

Uppermost among his concerns are religion and racism. A devout Jehovah’s Witness, like his mother, he says: “I believe in the Bible and I try to follow the Bible. I know that I’m not an angel and I’m not a devil either. I try to be as best as I can and I try to do what I think is right. It’s that simple….I don’t just pray at night. I pray at different times during the day. Whenever I see something beautiful, I say, ‘Oh, God, that’s beautiful.’ I say little prayers like that all through the day.”

To cope with the stresses of show business, Michael says he turns to his deity, not drugs. “As corny as it sounds, natural highs are the greatest highs in the world,” he attests. “The stars, the mountains, children, babies smiling are just magic,” he happily beamed.

The one thing that dims this glow is the pervasive racism that’s rampant in the world today, especially in America, the world traveler observes. Recalling how badly the singing Jacksons have been treated in southern cities, he said that it was difficult to believe.

“The people told us just deal with it (racism) because that’s how the South is,” he said and added: “That’s ignorance and it’s taught because it’s not genetic at all.

“I’m really not a prejudiced person at all. I believe that people should think about God more and creation because if you look at the many wonders inside the human bodies—the different colors of organs…and all these colors do different things in the human body—why can’t we do it as people?

“That (racism) is the only thing I hate. I really do. And that’s why I try to write, put it in songs, put it in dance, put it in my art—to teach the world. If politicians can’t do it, poets should put it in poetry and writers should put it in novels. That’s what we have to do and I think it’s so important to save the world.”

As widely read as he is traveled, Michael, a private high school graduate who once quit public school because girls were always screaming and pulling on him, said: “I love to read. I wish I could advise more people to read. There’s a whole new world in books. If you can’t afford to travel, you travel mentally through reading. You can see anything and go anyplace you want to in reading.”

Traveling and reading have greatly influenced his religious and racial views. About his travels, Michael explains: “Wherever you go, man-made things are man-made, but you’ve got to get out and see God’s beauty of the world.”

Reflecting upon America’s racial problems, he said: “I wish I could borrow from other countries, say, like Venezuela or Trinidad, the real love and color-blind people and bring it to America. When you travel, you realize how different America is. God, I hate to say this but our people are brainwashed.”

Of all his travels, he says his most emotional and moving experiences came in travels in Dakar, Senegal. “I’m going to raise my hand (to God) on this one,” he lit up like a light. “I always thought that Blacks, as far as artistry, were the most talented race on earth. But when I went to Africa, I was even more convinced. They do incredible things over there….They got the beats and the rhythm. I really see where drums come from. It makes you think that all Blacks have rhythm….I don’t want the Blacks to ever forget that this is where we come from and where our music comes from. And if we forget, it (Black history) would really get lost. I want us to remember.”

The Slave produced "Inside Out", written by Jesse Rae, peaked at #12 in 1982....as you can tell there are similarities to slave's Hit at the time "Watching you". ” ‘Supernova,’ it’s a co-write,” Hudson explained, sitting in the Beverly Hills Hotel a few days ago. “I think our head space, we kinda overlapped with similar emotions about things when we were hanging out last summer. I think we both could relate to the lyrics, so we built it together. Kanye brought in the chorus. We brought the verses up together.”

Kanye and Hudson were shooting the video for their song, which is the first single from the singer’s U.S. debut.

“What’s cool is, Kanye met my music before he met me,” Hudson said of their relationship. ” … I wouldn’t have gone up to Kanye in a club and said, ‘Here is my CD, you’ve gotta listen to it.’ That isn’t my style. I made my first album in London. It didn’t get released in the States, but somehow he got a copy, which meant that when Kanye was in London promoting Graduation, we were introduced briefly. A year later, I was in Paris on holiday. I got a call coming in to the office: ‘Here is a contract.’ ”

Last November, ‘Ye told Mixtape Monday that his new signee had the potential to be “bigger” than he is. Hudson appreciated the compliment but said it is a lot of pressure.

“Yeah, it’s really annoying, actually,” he smiled. “Now I got loads of work to do to try and live up to that.”

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Rapper Lil Wayne is suing the producer of a song he performed that allegedly sampled another singer's work without permission.

A lawsuit filed last year against Lil Wayne accuses him of copyright infringement, saying he failed to secure permission to sample folk singer Karma-Ann Swanepoel's song "Once" on his track "I Feel Like Dying."

A lawsuit filed last week by the rapper's lawyers says Rebel Rock Productions Inc., of Coconut Creek, Fla., produced "I Feel Like Dying" and was responsible for obtaining any necessary licensing agreements.

Rebel Rock hasn't responded to Lil Wayne's claims and doesn't have a lawyer named in court records. A telephone number listed for the company has been disconnected.

Last month, a federal magistrate ordered rapper Lil Wayne to turn over financial records for his Grammy-winning album, "Tha Carter III," to Urband & Lazar Music Publishing, which published "Once."

"I Feel Like Dying" isn't a track on "Tha Carter III," but a lawyer for Urband & Lazar argues that Lil Wayne promoted the album by singing that song in concert and allowing fans to download it for free on his Web site.

Lil Wayne is a New Orleans native whose real name is Dwayne Carter Jr.

Swanepoel is a native of South Africa now living in Florida.

While online retailers like iTunes hold a comfortable position in consumer purchases, physical retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy are attempting to figure out new ways to offset decreased sales. With that said, Best Buy is planning on bringing back vinyl records to their shelves.

According to the New York Post, Best Buy has high hopes for the move as 100 stores across the country had successful test runs in adding vinyl merchandise to their shelves. This experiment coincides with some staggering numbers concerning a potential rebirth in vinyl sales; in 2007, vinyl purchases were up 15% from the year before, and 2008 saw an increase of 89%, or roughly 1.9 million vinyl purchases. Through April of this year, 670,000 vinyl records have reportedly been sold.

Atlanta Records CEO Craig Kallman explained that getting vinyl records back on the shelves of major retailers is a plus for the record industry. “Our goal is to occupy as much square footage as possible with music products," Kallman told the Post.

With this new move, all major records labels are also planning on re-issuing and re-mastering classic titles, such as Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, along with its original artwork and packaging for avid vinyl collectors.

Former Clipse manager and nightclub owner Anthony "Geezy” Gonzalez has been charged in U.S. District Court with running a $10 million a year drug ring.

According to federal documents, Gonzalez’s 6 year drug empire has allegedly moved 100 pounds of cocaine and over a ton of marijuana through Hampton Roads, Virginia since 2003.

Authorities suspect Gonzalez imported the drugs from Panama Florida, California, and Arizona.

The 82-count indictment states that Gonzalez laundered drug money through several front businesses, including the Clipse’s booking agency Soul Providers Management.

The federal document elaborates that the defendants painted “themselves out as music producers, rappers, entrepreneurs, club owners, clothing designers and other legitimate occupations in order to conceal the true source of their income.”

In addition, Gonzalez is accused of making several kingpin transactions, such as purchasing 10 kilos cocaine for $200,000, and 625 pounds of marijuana for $540,000 in 2007.

Gonzalez’s Encore Lounge nightclub was allegedly purchased in 2007 for $80,000 and 40 pounds of marijuana.

Earlier this year, the Virginia Beach nightclub closed down after a reputed 100-plus incidents of violence and drug transactions in 2008.

Six other co-conspirators were named in the 60-page document, including a police officer who allegedly tipped Gonzalez off about the coming indictment.

To date, Anthony “Geezy” Gonzalez remains at large. At press time, the Clipse could not be reached for comment.

Guess which network has decided not to air President Obama's prime time address tomorrow night? And the news-less CW doesn't count.

While ABC, NBC and CBS are giving up precious sweeps month real estate for the president's press conference marking his first 100 days, Fox announced Monday that it will instead stick to its regular programming – an episode of "Lie to Me."

The network, known for its conservative news slant, is the lone broadcast channel that turned down President Obama's request for the time.

Tomorrow night's speech will be the third prime time news conference in Obama's 100-day presidency. It also marks the first time a broadcast network has refused his request.

*Rapper/producer Swizz Beatz and Hennessy V.S. are teaming to launch a new, limited line of cognac, called Hennessy Black.

The artist will perform an original song, "When I Step Into the Club," alongside the JabbaWockeez of "America's Best Dance Crew" during a launch event in New York on May 5, reports Billboard.com. An accompanying video by director Hype Williams will be revealed as well.

"Beatz is a long-time fan of the brand and approached us looking for ways we could work together. Since this product is all about having fun in the club, he suggested collaborating on a track that would be a hot dance song in the clubs," Andy Glaser, senior VP of Hennessy Business, tells Billboard.

Hennessy will launch a dance contest titled "Up/Down" on their YouTube channel, where consumers will be able to create and post their own "Up/Down" dance for a chance to be flown to LA, where Williams will film and cut them into a new version of the video to "When I Step In the Club."

Hennessy Black, the company's first major launch since 1961, will be available in 10 markets throughout the U.S. including Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, New York City, Ohio, Washington DC and Massachusetts.

The company hopes the new drink - which has a blend of Jasmine, daffodils and orange flowers mixed with citrus, honey and grapes - will take the Hennessy brand beyond the cognac category to the premium mixed spirits.

Rapper/actor DMX is taking a new path to overcoming his vices with a stint on the VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

The hit series, which will enter its third season, follows a group of celebrities as they struggle to move forward from drug and alcohol addictions by entering a treatment program run by renowned addiction medicine specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Past participants include former police brutality victim Rodney King and porn star Mary Carey as well as former professional wrestler Chyna , Family Matters star Jaimee Foxworth and actors Daniel Baldwin, Brigitte Nielsen and Jeff Conaway.

News of DMX’ Celebrity Rehab appearance was revealed by the show’s resident drug counselor Bob Forrest.

Prior to taking part in the new season, the 38-year-old entertainer, (born Earl Simmons) became embroiled in a series of drug-related incidents and encounters with the law.

Over the past 10 years, Simmons amassed a lengthy rap sheet filled with various charges ranging from marijuana and cocaine possession to multiple driving infractions and identity theft.

On December 31, 2008, the rapper was sentenced to serve 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of theft, drug possession and animal cruelty.

In January, Simmons’ downward spiral continued after he refused to attend scheduled work assignments and missed his medication treatment while serving his sentence.

A month later, the rap star was re-booked on suspicion of aggravated following allegations he threw a dinner tray at a corrections officer.

The incident has resulted in a possible extension of Simmons’ sentence as well as his probation being revoked.

*Opening statements began Friday in the civil trial against Snoop Dogg, who is accused of severely beating up a man during a 2005 concert in Seattle.

Richard Monroe, Jr. sued the rapper claiming he suffered serious injuries at the hands of Snoop and his entourage after jumping onstage during their show. Monroe seeks $22 million in damages and punitive penalties against the artist, whose real name is Calvin Broadus.

According to the Associated Press, Monroe's suit states he thought he had permission to join Snoop onstage during a performance of "Gin and Juice," but was beaten and robbed by the performer and members of his entourage.

The star of E! reality show "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood" attended one day of jury selection earlier this week, and was present in court as a tape of the incident was shown to jurors during opening statements by Monroe's attorneys

News: Lil Wayne Fails To Block "The Carter" Doc, Judge Allows Film Release

Lil Wayne's request to stop the release of the QD3 Entertainment documentary The Carter has been denied by a state court judge, who allowed the films release.

As a result of the ruling, the documentary can now be released globally.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael S. Mink denied Wayne's request for a preliminary injunction this week. QD3 executive Quincy Jones III said the ruling frees his company to seek distribution of the film. "We're very pleased with the court's decision," Jones said. "We made a great film, which was incredibly well received at Sundance, and showcases Lil Wayne's extraordinary talent." (Variety)
Weezy filed the lawsuit earlier this month regarding a "scandalous portrayal" of himself in the Sundance documentary.

The suit charges that Bernie Madoff's movie production company promised to give Lil Wayne approval over the final cut, but they didn't. And instead they presented an attempted scandalous "documentary" at Sundance. And to get into all of this, Wayne's lawyers decided to lead their complaint with Bernie Madoff, drawing some bizarre connection that we now live in the age of people conning other people. Probably the most interesting thing is that one of the defendants is Quincy Jones' son, Quincy Delight Jones III. The papers also state he uses the pseudonym QD3. (Radar Online)
While financial damages never emerged, he did cite breach of contract.

Wayne allowed Digerati Holdings and QD3 Entertainment to shoot a docu-film about him. The movie company, in turn, promised to give him approval over the final cut. In early December last year, the companies screened the film for Lil Wayne's manager, who advised them to remove objectionable content from the film. They sent another clip in January to the manager for review and approval. The manager once more demanded that all objectionable content be removed. Instead of doing so, they allegedly presented a "scandalous portrayal" of the rapper at Sundance without his approval. (All Headline News)
In other legal news, Weezy was forced to turn over financial information on his latest album Tha Carter III to a folk singer who had accused him of copyright infringement.

U.S. Magistrate Daniel Knowles III ordered the New Orleans rapper to hand over records about the sale of 2008's Tha Carter III. Karma-Ann Swanepoel claims in a federal lawsuit filed in May that Lil Wayne didn't have permission to sample her song "Once" in the track "I Feel Like Dying." The lawsuit says Lil Wayne's record label, Cash Money Records, failed to negotiate a license to use Swanepoel's song before millions of people downloaded "I Feel Like Dying." (Associated Press)
